Bayi Bali tidak memulai hidup dengan kaki kanan, atau bahkan dengan kiri!

Memang, di desa adat, bayi Bali tidak boleh menyentuh tanah sampai berusia tiga bulan. Praktik ini berasal dari keyakinan bahwa bayi yang baru lahir itu suci dan pantas diperlakukan dengan hormat. Akibatnya bayi terus menerus digendong oleh ibu atau anggota keluarga dekatnya. Selain hubungan spiritual, bukankah menyenangkan dipeluk sepanjang waktu?

Setelah 105 hari, sebuah upacara khusus bernama Nyabutan atau Nyambutin diadakan untuk merayakan bayi akhirnya menyentuh Bumi Pertiwi. Seorang pendeta diundang untuk memimpin upacara, dan ada berbagai ritual penyucian, pelafalan, dan pemberkatan. Pendeta memberkati bayi dengan air suci, dan membiarkan kaki bayi menyentuh lantai. Ketika kaki bayi menyentuh tanah untuk pertama kalinya, ini melambangkan bahwa ia kini telah menjadi manusia yang utuh dan nyata
